The 817 Companion app is dedicated to all the proud owners and users of the Yaesu 817 amateur radio.
The Yaesu 817 is a fantastic radio but has some faults. One of those is the very small display.
The 817 Companion app will connect to your Yaesu 817 via USB cable or Bluetooth serial adapter, and will let you almost completely control the radio frequency, band, IPO, ATT, NB, AGC, Transmit Power, front/rear antenna… all with a simple touch on your Android device display.
But not only!
The 817 Companion will put your little radio on steroids but adding:
- logging possibilities (with ADIF and CSV export)
- automatic eQSL sending (as soon as you log a QSO, the app sends the eQSL)
- automatic query to QRZ.com to fill in data (name, QTH, locator)
- automatic calculation of the distance and bearing
- automatic frequency scanning up or down from 1Hz to 100Mhz at the time 🙂
- a beautiful audio spectrum/waterfall with touch QSY
- it supports the use of “panadapter” kit that allows to use the 817 as an SDR with up to 24kHz bandwidth (contact me if you want more info about that!)
- antenna tuning with a single press of a display button
- real time DX Cluster spots with touch QSY, filtering and alerts!
- 10 frequency memories for each band (a total of 140 memories!). Each one can be customized with a label and a color
- and more…
IMPORTANT:
To make the app communicate with the Yaesu 817, you need a USB CAT cable with an OTG USB cable adapter (and an Android phone supporting OTG), or a Bluetooth CAT wireless serial adapter.
To take full advantage of the app functionalities we suggest that you also get the easy to install, no soldering required, 817 panadapter kit that will transform your Yaesu 817 into an SDR!
You can get the app here:

Hi Andrea,
This is a nice app to manage FT817, congratulations !
And for FT897 (& FT857) is your app compatible with these rigs ?
I have a FT897 with BlueTooth adapter and also an USB cable for remote CAT.
I am looking also for 8×7 panadapter with USB DVB-T adapter (Noelec SDR), what is your design ?
Thanks for reading.

Hi Denis,
the app is only for the Yaesu 817 as it uses a lot of undocumented commands that I don’t think they work on the 857 or 897.
The panadapter kit is a kit that’s been developed by a friend ham operator. The kit is also compatible with the Yeasu 857 and the Yaesu 897. Also they have the advantage to have more slots and not only one like the 817.
The kit that is installed in the filter slot inside the 817. It doesn’t need any soldering and it’s pretty easy to install.
From the kit two cables come out: one is an audio cable with a female 3.5 jack that has to be attached to the audio in of a PC/Mac or a tablet/smartphone.
The other cable is a power 12v one. And it can be attached to the battery pack inside the 817 (that’s how I do it).
All you have to do is enable the SSB filter in the 817 settings menu.
Using SDR software that are able to use the audio card as an I/Q input, like HDSDR, PowerSDR IF, SharpSDR or gqrx for PC/Mac or my 817Companion app for Android you’ll be able to monitor a badwidth depending on the sample rate of the sound card. On Android the sample rate is 48kHz and the bandwidth is half the sample rate (so 24kHz). With the 817Companion app you’ll be able to monitor 12kHz above and 12kHz below the used frequency.
With a PC/Mac it can be more.
We are trying to make the kit available on in Tindie.com.
For now we have 10 available and if you are interested let me know and I can give more information.
Thanks for your interest.

Hi Charles,
I personally use a Nexus 7 2013 and works flawlessly: fast, great 7″ display (that in my opinion is the perfect size for portable use) and good resolution. But not cheap even if it’s a 2013 model. If you can find one at a good price (even used) grab it 🙂
Otherwise most of those available can do but the higher the display resolution is, the better. Also make sure that it supports OTG so that you can eventually attach it to the 817 via USB serial, and that has an audio in port (most of them have the audio in embedded and “hidden” in the earphones jack).

I have a suggestion as a small improvement. On the callsign entry box could you add an option to clear any existing text. If you have been following the DX Cluster spots and are then working other stations it would be a lot quicker than having to clear the text by the backspace key.

Hi Mauri,
I just tested the app using a USB CAT cable with OTG adapter and Wolphilink at the same time.
No problem in connecting and showing of the frequency and controlling the radio.
Did you solve?
72/73 Andrea IU4APC

Not showing of the frequency and not controlling the radio. I’m connecting with BlueCat Bluetooth interface, not OTG wire. Its not working even with BlueCat dongle only and when Wolphi link not connected.
I have same kind of error messages like Henning every time when II touch example NB.
After your update the band selection for DX Cluster not work. Before update it works.
I am thinking one possible reason of errors. If I settings 9600 baud connecting not working, even DX Cluster not change radio freguency. But with 38400 I can do this.
Are you possible connect with all baudrate with Bluetooth or OTG?
And coud you read all FT-817nd settings what you use for me, if there is something different.

You have to set the 817 baudrate and the app baudrate to the one used by the Bluetooth dongle. Usually it is 9600 baud but it can be any. Please check with your BT dongle vendor.
Once you have set that, LONG press the ON/OFF button and the Bluetooth discovery should start.
After the discovery phase you should see a list of all the BT devices found. Select the dongle. If it’s the first time probably a PIN will be asked. Usually it’s 1234 but again check with your dongle vendor if 1234 doesn’t work.
If everything goes well you should see a message confirming that you’ve connected via BT and you should be able to see the frequency match the one of the 817 and be able to use the app.
The error messages depend on the fact that the app thinks it’s connected while it’s not.
If you keep having problems email me.

Hi,

Do you do a single press of the on/off button?
Are you sure the the OTG cable is ok? You can test it with by attaching a USB keyboard or mouse.
When you attach the USB cable, does a popup come out asking for which app to use for the 817 Companion? If it doesn’t than it means that you have another app set as default to use the USB. You have to reset it using the upper right menu in the app section of the Android preferences.

Hi,
No you don’t have connection if you can’t see the frequency synched with the one of the 817.
The audio spectrum/waterfall doesn’t rely on the CAT but on the audio mic or audio in of your Android device.
Tomorrow I’ll write a FAQ with all the possible tests to see what part of the equipment is not working properly.
The app is OK and it’s been already tested and working on hundreds of devices. Probably something in the settings or in the HW is wrong/broken 😉
Stay tuned and tomorrow I’ll add a detailed list of tests.

Andrea… once I had all of the needed pieces I purchased the app through Google Play for my Android device. I have it hooked up to my 817 with a BT dongle I purchased on eBay. Works beautifully. Looking forward to portable operation now with it. The only thing that didn’t function correctly in the beginning was that though the radio was set to 9600 and the BT dongle set to the same, I found that my Z817 tuner is hard-set to 38400. I have sent a support question to LDG to find out if there is a way to change the Z817 tuner to also function at 9600. Hopefully I can. For others thinking about this combo – it works a bit different that original design of the use of the Z817 in that the “Tune” button on the tuner no longer will key the rig. What I do is select the “tune” button in the software and then select tune. Just have to remember to unkey the rig when it’s done. Happy Hammin!

Most likely inside there’s an HC-05 or HC-06 module.

Andrea,
Yes it is quite easy to change BT module speed to 38400baud, which is needed for ft817/z817 combination. But is it possible to have a button in SW to activate the tuner?

Not sure about that. I have to look if there’s a serial command that can be associated to the start of the tuning or if it’s only “physical” (pressing the front button).
If it’s possible to use a serial command, then it’ll be easy to integrate in the app. Otherwise it’s not possible.
What the app already does is to put the 817 into “tuning mode”. Then all you have to do is press the tuning button of the Z817.

Just as a follow up, the response that I received from LDG was simply that the Bluetooth data rate was not a programmable item. They did however suggest searching for an app that could modify the dongle. At any rate, once I set everything to the proper speed for use, it all works fine.

!!Solution for Bluetooth-issue while using Android 6!!
Hi Andrea,
Owners of a device running Android 6 are facing the problem that 817 Companion does not find a Bluetooth-device, although the Android settings state that the Bluetooth-device is found and connected.
Google has changed Android 6 in such a way that apps require access to (rights for) the ‘location services’ if the app wants to use Bluetooth.
pRxTx (by Dan, YO3GGX) faces the same problem and Dan has fixed this in pRxTx v. 0.9.0-16 (experimental version).
See https://www.yo3ggx.ro/pocketrxtx/doc09016/i.html
(Search for ‘>-6’ for a description).
Could you adapt 817 Companion in such a way that it also requests for access to the ‘location services’?

I have just installed and tested your fine application for 817 control. I am using the standard CAT cable that terminates in a DB9 RS232 connector, to which I plug-in the FTDI RS232/USB adapter and connect it to my Samsung Galaxy Note 4 via the OTG cable. And it works fine, just have to play with CAT timing and baud-rate because I find the frequency update rather slow.
The reason I am writing to you is to ask you what type and where from to purchase the CAT cable that terminates directly to the USB connector, in order to avoid using the bulky DB9/FTDI adapter.
Second question is: is this USB CAT powered from the 817 or draws the power from the phone?
Maybe will have some further questions once I play longer with the setup.

Please fix the app for 38400 on FT-817ND. I paid already so either make it for or give my money back please. FYI FT-817ND is set to 38400 and so is BlueCat. When I use repeaterbook app, it finds the BlueCat ok and works ok at 38400, but not 817 Companion. Just says No device found. Fix or remove from playstore! (please).

Correct this damn program or remove it from the Play Store! It is quite unfair to take money for something that is no longer fully functional without informing the customers about it. Your excuse that you supposedly don’t have time to repair the program, that is ridiculous.

I should be starting on a complete rewrite of the app that will make it available for both iOS and Android. So hopefully in a few months a new version should be available. Cheers, Andrea

Hi Andrea
Is there any update on availability?? I have a 817 but it is becoming more and more difficult for me to use due to the display and this looks like the ideal cure for me with my large android tablet. Please could you let me know if I can get this anywhere just to see if it will solve my issues or if I am going to have to change radios
Thank you
